City of Cardiff (Melingriffith) Brass Band returns to Whit Friday contests

For the first time since 2015, our organisation was proudly represented at the Whit Friday March Contests under the name City of Cardiff (Melingriffith) Organisation Band.

It was a fantastic, memorable day for all involved, with the band enjoying a full schedule of contests across Saddleworth. Spirits were high throughout, and the day was capped off with an excellent result at Uppermill, providing a brilliant finish to a long but rewarding day of music-making.

Music Performed

  • Street Marches: Sospan Fach, Sex Bomb
  • Stand March: Castell Coch

The band performed with energy and commitment across every venue, representing Cardiff and our proud heritage with distinction.

Results Overview

Village Played Placing Total Bands
Diggle 3 62 64
Dobcross 14 66 75
Lydgate 34 68 81
Greenfield 57 46 71
Uppermill 53 19 56

The band successfully visited five villages, navigating the busy Whit Friday schedule and a large number of competitors this year. With many contests seeing significantly increased entries, the level of competition was particularly strong across the board.

Despite a determined effort to reach Delph, the exceptional number of bands competing this year, with an estimated 40–60 additional entries across the Saddleworth contests, meant we were unfortunately unable to perform there.

A Day to Remember

Whit Friday is always a highlight in the brass band calendar, combining tradition, stamina, and musicianship in equal measure. From early starts through to late-night performances, the commitment shown by all members was outstanding.

A huge thank you goes to:

  • All players and dep players for their dedication throughout the day
  • Our supporters who travelled and cheered us on
  • The organisers and volunteers across all venues

To return to Whit Friday under the organisation’s name after more than a decade makes the occasion even more special, and this marks an exciting step forward for the organisation.

We look forward to building on this success and returning next year!
