Community Brass is the organisation’s all ability band and welcomes players of all ages.
The band rehearses on a Tuesday night from 19:15 - 21:15 and always enjoys a tea break for a natter half way through.
Members range from those who have come back to playing after a period away from banding, those that just want to play for fun without the pressure of competitions or those that can’t commit to weekly rehearsals and just want to play when they can.
Rehearsals are light hearted with a range of music.
The band’s aim is to bring the joy of brass band music to as many people as possible and regularly perform in venues across Cardiff and South East Wales, including fundraising concerts for the band and charities, fetes and Christmas events. It also provides a smaller group of musicians, together with some players from M1 or M2, to form M10, a group of 10 players that can provide music for smaller venues or events.
Conductor Profile: Kieran Richards
Kieran has been an integral part of the City of Cardiff (Melingriffith) Brass Band (CCMBB) Organisation since 2018. In addition to his voluntary conducting role with the Community Brass Band, he serves as Chair of the Executive Committee, where he plays a pivotal role in shaping the organisation’s strategic direction and governance.
Although not a brass player, Kieran is an accomplished percussionist with extensive experience, including five years with the CCMBB Organisation’s Championship Section Band, M1. He regularly offers his services as a freelance percussionist across Devon and the southwest, working with orchestral and choral groups to perform a diverse range of repertoires. In addition to his percussion work, Kieran is a dedicated pianist and clarinettist, both instruments he has played since childhood.
Kieran’s passion for conducting began during his university years, where he spent over three years leading a variety of ensembles, including the Exeter University Concert Band and Clarinet Choir. These formative experiences helped him develop his musical leadership, fine-tuning his approach to ensemble direction and expanding his repertoire—a wealth of knowledge he now brings to his role with the CCMBB Organisation.
A dedicated enthusiast of film music, Kieran strives to weave this passion into his work with the band, creating unique and engaging performances. He is committed to understanding and reflecting the musical tastes of the band’s members, carefully curating programmes that inspire and challenge the ensemble while fostering a shared love of music.
